Yellowstone and Cody family adventure itinerary guide

One main idea each day

A five-day route with room to breathe

The guide gives you a practical starting point. Shorten a day or leave out a stop when your family needs a slower pace.

Day 1 · Meet Cody

Arrive, settle in and ease into the trip with a western history stop or a relaxed evening.

Day 2 · Cross into Yellowstone

Travel from Cody through the East Entrance, allow time for scenic stops and finish near West Yellowstone.

Day 3 · Geysers and color

Choose a few geothermal highlights, including the Old Faithful area and Grand Prismatic, with room to shorten the day.

Day 4 · Canyon and wildlife

Pair a waterfall and canyon viewpoint with a wildlife drive through Hayden Valley.

Day 5 · One last park morning

Choose one final favorite near your departure route and leave a comfortable window to travel home.

Where to stay and how the route works

The route uses one night in Cody and three nights in or near West Yellowstone. It works best when the East and West entrance roads are open to regular cars; check current road status for your dates before booking around the crossing.

Before you travel

Yellowstone is a large park. The guide includes substantial driving days, optional stops and reminders to leave time for wildlife traffic and unplanned breaks. The PDF includes route notes, practical reminders and official links for checking current details.
